The Nut of Jupiter
Walnut trees grow big.
Native to regions stretching from the Balkans through Western Asia and into the Himalayas, Juglans regia reaches heights of 25 to 35 meters with trunks up to 2 meters in diameter.¹ The largest walnut forests are in Kyrgyzstan, where nearly pure stands of walnut trees cover mountains at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,000 meters.²
The Romans noticed.
They called walnuts “Jovis glans.” Jupiter’s nut. The nut of the king of gods.³
